Kathu Tin Mining Museum With Semi Interactive Exhibitions
Phuket's history and development centered largely on tin mining and industrious labor of its local ancestors. Today, we will take you back in time to the glorious mining days which are brought back through semi interactive exhibitions at Kathu Tin Mining Museum located on Kathu-Koh Kaew Road in Amphur Kathu, Phuket Province.
On this lazy day, we decided to hire an open-air bus from the city to Kathu and arrived at an impressive Sino-Portuguese building lovingly called ‘Angmoh Lao Nai Hua Muang’. It is a one and a half storey building with huge lawn in the middle for carrying out leisure activities. Inside the museum, visitors can learn about the history of tin-mining back in the old days and how the workers went about their days. There are also old pictures taken from the time which speak a thousand words of what went on.
There were several types of tin-mining back then and each required different equipments. Everything is explained in details here and we guarantee that visitors will be able to learn a lot about the trait.
We were quite fascinated with all the displays both inside and out. All the rooms were separated into different stages of mining, showing how they were retrieved, separated, their values, how they affected the lives of the locals, etc.
The way the exhibition is put on display makes everything look interesting. It is a great place for parents and children to spend fun, educational time together; and on the day of our visit, we enjoyed seeing both Thai and foreign families thoroughly having a good time among themselves.
As for local Phuketians, it is a place not to be missed. We guarantee that after you have learned about the island’s history, you will feel even more proud of your ancestry than ever before.
Kathu Tin Mining museum is open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For more information, please call Tel. 088 766 0962 or 076 321 073.
