Following the path along Mai Khao Beach we came to the Leather-Back Turtles’ breeding ground, a pride and joy of the Phuketians. You will also find a few five-star hotels along the area.
Leaving the beach and turning onto the highway, we passed Baan Koh Aen and couldn’t help making a stop. At the end of the road, a marina appeared before us so we realized this is where fancy yachts are anchored. It is no surprise that Phuket was voted “Best Asian Maritime Capital”. There are ports where excursion boats take visitors around verdant islands and to their hotels while they relax with a cup of coffee in hand, admiring gorgeous views beyond.
Back to the 10th km. on the highway, we turned right to the direction of the airport straight to Nai Yang Beach and reached Sirinart National Park. Upon entering we were greeted with rows of pine trees and white sandy beach where Leather-Back turtles lay their eggs. It is a nice place to take a dip in the ocean or go snorkeling to admire beautiful corals.
After that, we headed to Naiton Beach. This area is quieter than some other beaches making it the ideal place for a private stroll for two. The wind and waves here are quite strong so got wet without even going in the water.
Following the meandering beachside road and up and down the mountain, we got to see panoramic views of the ocean and lush rubber tree plantation. Reaching Layan Beach we came upon The Laguna, an old mine which had been refurbished into a hotel with golf course. It would have been nice to go for a round or two if we had the time. Instead, we went for a big lunch at one of the several restaurants nearby.
Full-stomached and ready to rock, we made our way to Surin Beach. This area is filled with local stalls selling Somtam-grilled BBQ chicken that is loved by Thais and foreigners alike.
The scenery around Kamala Beach is gorgeous, both along the beach and up the cliffs. Passing through Kalim we reached Patong Beach, the hub of tourist paradise. We loved the shopping, nightlife and sights and sounds that go on all day long. Must find the time to come for nightclub-hopping one of these days.
Next on the list is Karon Beach, the longest one in Phuket. Visitors will be able to find their own spot away from everyone else here. At Kata Beach, you might spot groups of young surfers riding and bobbing in and out of the crashing waves.
As the day progressed, we headed to Laem Promthep and waited patiently to witness the most beautiful sunset. It lasted only a few moments but was absolutely memorable. Before leaving, we treaded downwards and took some pictures as reminder of this beautiful day.
Taking the drive around Phuket Island with friends had been another day well spent. Everything we came across- the beaches, the people, attractions, restaurants made up a fun-filled day that will live on in everyone’s memories for years to come.
