The money wasraised through donations, raffle ticket sales and a spectacular silent auction with awide array of items donated by local merchants.“We were proud to be the title sponsors for this event,” said Pepe Viva, GeneralManager at Bliss Beach Club. “It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the clubwhile supporting such a worthy cause. It was one of those rare evenings where acommunity of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds comes together towards acommon goal. As I overheard one guest say… it’s all for the kids.”

All the proceeds from the event, also sponsored by Phuket News, Live 89.5, BB&B

programs run by the Phuket has Been Good to Us Foundation at two local

government schools.

“I want to thank all of the sponsors and contributors for their generosity,” said Peter

Hamilton, fundraising chair, board of directors. “When I see the progress being

made by the children who participate in the program I know that their lives will be

enriched because of the support of our donors and volunteers as well as the tireless

work of our staff and teachers.”

“It was an evening I won’t soon forget. Everything from the entertainment to the

delicious four‐course meal was incredible,” said supporter Sarah Pettigrew, who

helped make the event a success. “The Andaman Sea was the perfect backdrop for

our mermaid greeters and the trapeze artists from Mid‐Air Circus Arts, who were a

surprise for the guests. And, other than a few sprinkles, the weather cooperated

beautifully and we raised a significant amount of money for a wonderful charity.”

“Chi Running” in Focus at Laguna Phuket International Marathon

The revolutionary “Chi Running” technique will be showcased at the forthcoming Laguna Phuket International Marathon (LPIM) in a workshop led by one of Asia’s leading exponents of the method that has taken the running world by storm.

Lit Onrubia of the Philippines, a U.S. certified Chi Running instructor, will lead the workshop at Laguna Phuketon Saturday 9 June, the day before the seventh annual LPIM that is expected to draw thousands of runners of all ages and abilities from around the world to the paradise Thai island.

Chi Running is a revolutionary running technique that emphasises energy efficiency and injury-free running through proper posture, alignment, relaxation and leveraging the force of gravity.

Lit, who at one time was the only Certified Chi Running Instructor in Asia, is a running enthusiast who’s been running happily and injury-free for more than 14 years.

He studied under Chi Running Master Instructors Chris Griffin in San Francisco and Kathy Griest in San Diego, and now holds regular workshops in the Philippines and elsewhere in Asia.

“Hundreds of thousands of runners all over the world are now running farther, faster and completely pain-free because they started applying Chi Running principles,” says Lit.

“Unfortunately for so many of us, years of poor posture and bad habits have changed our natural alignment and biomechanics. Poor alignment and biomechanics are the main reasons why we move without ease, and with soreness and pain.

“My workshops first and foremost focus is on correcting posture and running form, then breaking it down to explain the elements of efficient movement.

“I show runners how to move with nature instead of against it by teaching gravity-assisted running. One of the most important Chi Running principles is that running should be as simple as falling forward continuously, with a soft landing each time,” he said.

Race director Roman Floesser of Go Adventure Asia, said: “Lit’s workshop is sure to be of interest to many of our runners and will be a fantastic enhancement of their race experience.”

The workshop, which will combine a presentation with practical teaching, is scheduled to be held at Laguna Grove during the afternoon of Saturday 9 June as race registrations take place.

The “Run Paradise”  LPIM, Asia’s fastest-growing destination marathon, offers a full marathon,  21.1km half marathon and 10.5km run, as well as the  91.5FM 5km community walk and 2km children’s race.

Online registration is available until 2 June at www.phuketmarathon.comwith special deals at Laguna Phuket hotels also available on the website.  More information on Lit Onrubia’s Chi Running atwww.forwardleanrunning.com.

Fresenius Kabi Asia-Pacific to host Asia’s Premier Symposium for Clinical Nutrition in Thailand

The Fresenius Kabi Advanced Nutrition Course (FRANC) Asia 2012 brings global experts to Asia Pacific to discuss the development of Clinical Nutrition in the region. FRANC Asia held in Phuket for the first time.

The Fresenius Kabi Advanced Nutrition Course (FRANC) Asia 2012 was held in Thailand at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa from 27 to 28 April 2012. FRANC Asia brings medical experts in their field from Asia, Europe and South America for scientific discussions on current concepts and developments within Clinical Nutrition therapy, providing a unique forum for experience sharing and discussions within the field.

Professor Jonathan Asprer, chairman of FRANC Asia 2012 revealed that “FRANC Asia has been well received each year with high attendance and active participation from top experts in Clinical Nutrition from Asia Pacific and Europe. Our aim is to generate discussion and advancement in Clinical Nutrition and to raise awareness of malnutrition in the region. FRANC Asia offers an exceptional opportunity for practitioners of Clinical Nutrition to learn of the most recent updates and cutting-edge developments, and practice excellence in Clinical Nutrition.”

Fresenius Kabi Asia Pacific hosted the 12th FRANC Asia in Thailand. FRANC is a symposium for medical professionals to share their knowledge and experiences in clinical nutrition therapy. Insufficient food and nutrient intake due to disability and disease are at the heart of the cause of malnutrition, a major public health problem that frequently goes unrecognized and untreated.

It has been found that malnutrition is costly to the individual, to society and to the economy – the estimated cost of disease-related malnutrition in Europe is Euro171 billion.

Approximately 30% of patients are malnourished upon arrival at hospital or during their hospital stay. Malnutrition negatively affects the general well-being of hospital patients as well as their response to treatment, which can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. This results in increased healthcare costs, such as an increase in a patient’s length of hospital stay. Prof Chulaporn Roongpisuthipong from the Department of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital points out even in Thailand for hospitalized patients, the prevalence of malnutrition is still high and associated with increased costs and increased length of hospital stay. It is shown from Prof Chulaporns’ presentation that nearly 70% of patients in internal medicine wards and nearly 50% of patients in surgical wards are classified as malnourished.

FRANC Asia, organized by Fresenius Kabi Asia Pacific since 2001, brings together medical professionals in Clinical Nutrition from Asia Pacific and beyond. Presentations by international experts on current topics within the field of Clinical Nutrition are complemented by interactive sessions and working groups to facilitate a sharing of knowledge and experiences, and to promote networking.

Fresenius Kabi’s objective in organizing FRANC Asia is to focus on advanced topics within the field of clinical nutrition therapy and implementation in daily practice.

FRANC Asia 2012 welcomed over 220 delegates from Europe and 11 Asia Pacific countries including Thailand, Vietnam, China, India, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong.
