Surge in Entries Makes Annual Event Asia’s
Fastest-Growing Destination Marathon
Surge in Entries Makes Annual Event Asia’sFastest-Growing Destination Marathon Record numbers of runners from around the world are racing to Phuket to “Run Paradise” amid the island’s picture postcard tropical scenery in the sixth annual Laguna Phuket International Marathon on Sunday, 12 June. International entries since registration opened in October have surged 20 per cent from the same period last year – putting the 2011 marathon on course to smash last year’s record of more than 4,600 entries from some 45 countries. Year-on-year growth since the inaugural 2006 event makes Laguna Phuket International Marathon the biggest and fastest-growing destination marathon in Asia. The “Run Paradise” tagline is an apt description of the event, which sees runners of all ages on a mainly flat course that takes in rubber and pineapple plantations, beach views, local villages and the tropical lagoons of Laguna Phuket – all in a family-friendly carnival atmosphere. As well as the full marathon there’s a half marathon, 10.5km run, 2km children’s race and 5km family walk. And a two-day expo with sponsor booths and fun activities around Laguna Phuket will stoke the carnival atmosphere as runners from around Thailand, the Asian region and elsewhere in the world gather to take part. Race Director Roman Floesser of organiser Go Adventure Asia, said: “We don’t encourage runners to strive for personal best times, but to enjoy the scenery and the complete race experience. That’s also a reason why we don’t offer prize money – it’s all about participation and having fun.” Runners are encouraged to take part in fundraising, either for their own chosen charity, or for Laguna Phuket’s community initiative to support local schools. Early Bird registration is open until the end of March and online registration until 4 June. Hotel specials at all Laguna Phuket resorts and hotels are available for instant booking on the event website. For further information or to register, visit: www.phuketmarathon.com |

Laguna Beach Resort, a cornerstone hotel property of the deluxe Laguna Phuket destination resort, will soon undergo a change of ownership. Laguna Hotels & Resorts Plc., the joint owning company of Laguna Beach Resort, has agreed to sell its shareholding in the hotel for THB 723, 565, 000 to Laguna Phuket Club Co. Ltd., a Thai company controlled by Real Estate Equity Partners (RECAP), an Asian-focused real estate private equity fund. Laguna’s joint venture partner in the hotel has also agreed to sell the remaining shares to Laguna Phuket Club Co. Ltd., to give Recap full ownership of the 252-room deluxe beachfront property. Completion of the deal is expected in May, 2011. Laguna Beach Resort was the second hotel to be built in Laguna Phuket when it opened in 1992 and is now one of seven deluxe hotel and villa properties in the resort complex. The operations of Laguna Beach Resort and the Laguna Phuket integrated resort complex will be unaffected by the change of ownership. RECAP, headed by chairman Suchad Chiaranussati, has a high-profile presence in Thailand’s real estate market. It acquired Jungceylon shopping complex and hotel in Phuket in 2006 and has also invested in Bangkok’s prestigious four-tower Millennium Residence development. The change in Laguna Beach Resort’s ownership comes six months after Laguna sold another hotel, the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, to Dusit Thani Plc. for THB 2.62 billion. Both transactions are in line with Laguna’s publicly disclosed strategy of divesting part of its interests in Thailand, enabling focus on emerging opportunities elsewhere in Asia. Laguna also recently announced that Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts will take over operations of the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket when the current management contract with Starwood Hotels & Resorts expires on 30 June 2011. The property will undergo a five-month THB 500 million refurbishment and re-open in December as the Angsana Laguna Phuket. Michael Ayling, managing director of Laguna Resorts & Hotels, said: “These recent developments all reflect our commitment to developing our business in Phuket and elsewhere in the region, without compromising our renowned levels of customer service.” |

Fun-packed evening activities and entertainment are staged in and around the Festival marquee in Canal Shopping Village, at the heart of the Laguna Phuket resort. A Kidzole flying trapeze, bouncy castle, visits by baby elephants, Kidz Lounge with movies and video games, and much more will keep the youngsters occupied while parents kick back in the Festival Beer Tent with Happy Hour bar prices, barbecue fare, music and entertainment, and live telecasts of international sporting events. The Laguna Phuket Summer Family Festival was a runaway success last year, with hundreds of Laguna guests and local residents flocking to the daily events and festivities. Quest’s Kidz Fun Zone proved particularly popular, with one parent commenting: “Our child loved going to the Fun Zone, he wants to come back next year, as we do. It’s a wonderful thing for the children and parents. I will highly recommend to all our friends back home.
