Jaray Hits the Heights Among World Triathlon Elite in Hawaii

First-ever Thai to complete back-to-back Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championships

Thai triathlete Jaray Jearanai of Phuket is on top of the world after completing the legendary Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, among an elite global field of triathlon competitors, in a time of just over 11 hours.

His achievement yesterday (Sunday, 9 October) is all the more remarkable as this was the first-ever full Ironman challenge for Jaray, a marketing executive at Laguna Holiday Club in Laguna Phuket – venue of the annual Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship – and just weeks after he successfully completed the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas.

Jaray now holds the unique distinction of being the first-ever Thai to compete in both back-to-back Ironman and Ironman 70.3 World Championships in the same year.

The annual Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, comprising a 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike ride and 42.1km marathon, is considered the ultimate triathlon challenge and most difficult one-day endurance event in the world, with its 1,800 entry slots are highly coveted by triathletes worldwide.

Jaray, sponsored by his employer Laguna Phuket and Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club where he trains, to compete in Hawaii and Las Vegas, crossed the Kona finishing line in a time of 11:04:35 after a swim of 1:04:35; bike time of 5:48:27; and run of 3:51:22.

An ecstatic Jaray (31), said: “It was the toughest experience of my life and I’m so happy to have completed it.

“It’s always been my dream to take part in a full Ironman – I just didn’t expect my first one to be the World Championship in Kona alongside some of my biggest heroes.

“This race and the Las Vegas Ironman 70.3 have been incredible experiences and I’m so grateful to Laguna Phuket for helping to make my dreams come true.”

The Kona World Championship was won by Australia’s Craig Alexander in a new course record of 8:03:56 and Chrissie Wellington of Great Britain took the women’s title in 08:55:08.

Alexander, who also won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas to make it a 2011 World Championship double, has been invited to compete at the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship at Laguna Phuket on 4 December.

Laguna Phuket Making Community Splash with Kids’ Survival Swim Programme

Laguna Phuket is harnessing the enthusiasm of triathletes in this year’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship to launch its latest community initiative that will provide survival swim lessonsfor thousands of local youngsters.

Hundreds of triathletes registering for the two events are being asked to raise money through online sponsorships to help raise an estimated THB 600,000 (US$ 19,835) required to set up and run the 12-month programme.

Thai Health Authority statistics show drowning as the highest cause of death for Thai children under the age of 15* and teaching children to be competent in deep water, with the ability to get to safety, is a major priority for coastal regions.

The Survival Swim Programme is being developed with support from Cherngtalay Municipality, Phuket Lifeguard Club, Phuket International Academy’s Thanyupura Sports & Leisure Club, Surf Lifesaving of Australia and Laguna Holiday Club.

It will teach more than 2,600 children aged 12-15 years in Thalang District schools how to save themselves if they fall into deep water; and be staged on the beaches of Bang Tao, Municipality swimming pools and Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club.

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon on 27 November and Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship on 4 December will draw hundreds of triathletes from around the world to Phuket, who are now being asked to arrange sponsorships at:
www.lagunaphuket.com/CSR/athlete-sponsorship-programme.php

Triathletes – who face gruelling swims in the first leg of their triathlon challenges – are competent swimmers, aware of respect for water and the importance of this vital life skill.

Suthasinee Rukmit, Laguna Phuket’s director of Community Relations, said: “We’re delighted that the many triathletes who come here to compete will be able to be part of a meaningful project that involves their chosen sport and also
creates lasting benefits for local communities.”

The official launch of the Survival Swim Programme is set to be the centerpiece of a week-long Tri-Fest staged at Laguna Phuket between the two back-to-back triathlons.

The new programme follows an initial Survival Swim Course held earlier this year at Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club, when members of Hong Kong Tritons triathlon club gave lessons to children from Laguna Phuket’s school charity
partner, Baan Jao Krua School in Phang Nga Province.

And the programme’s fund-raising was kicked-off in style recently when revellers at Laguna Phuket’s Summer Family Festival closing party raised THB 14,000 (US$ 463) in a raffle to win prizes at the resort’s new Angsana Laguna Phuket
hotel.

Laguna Phuket Triathlete to Race in Two World Championships

Scoops Coveted Ironman World Championship Qualifying Slot to Become First Thai Competing in Back-to-Back Worldwide Ironman Pinnacles

Phuket triathlete Jaray Jearanai will take on the world’s triathlon elite when he competes in this year’s Ironman 70.3 and full Ironman World Championships – less than a year after completing his first-ever Ironman 70.3 triathlon at Laguna Phuket – to become the first Thai national competitor at these worldwide triathlon pinnacles.

Jaray, a marketing executive at Laguna Holiday Club was sponsored by Laguna Phuket to race in the Ironman 70.3 Philippines on 14 August, which offered top age group finishers 30 qualifying slots for the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on 7 October, as well as qualifying slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Lake Las Vegas on 11 September.

And Jaray’s storming performance – finishing fifth in his age group and 29th overall in a time of 4:46:41among a field of almost 700 triathletes – saw him scoop qualifying slots to both World Championships.

His feat sets up a unique double challenge for the dedicated amateur. It means he will be pitting himself against the cream of triathlon talent in two top World Championship endurance events just a month apart – and the Kailua- Kailua-Kona race will be his first-ever full distance Ironman.

“I trained hard for the Philippines Ironman 70.3 but I was really surprised to finish so well and get the Ironman World Championship slot,” said Jaray, aged 31.

“It’s always been my ambition to compete in a full Ironman. I just didn’t expect my first one to be the World Championship, competing against the best triathletes in the world.”

“But I’m absolutely thrilled and honoured to be able to participate in such a massive event.”

The full Ironman consists of a 3.8km swim followed by a 180.2km bike ride and a 42.1km marathon. The legendary Kailua-Kona World Championship, competed on an iconic lava field course, is considered the sport’s “Holy Grail.”

Jaray’s Philippines triumph was only his third Ironman 70.3 – a 1.9 km swim, 90km bike ride and 21km run – and his second overseas triathlon.

He finished just 15 minutes behind triathlon legend Australian Belinda Granger, the current Laguna Phuket Triathlon women’s champion, who was first woman home in eighth place overall.

Jaray will go on to line up in Las Vegas and Kailua-Kona among the cream of  professional and age group triathletes from around the world, headed by defending Ironman World Champions Chris McCormack and Mirinda Carfrae, and defending Ironman 70.3 World Champions Michael Raelert and Caroline Steffen –  women’s winner of the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific at Laguna Phuket last December.

Each race has only 1,800 slots that are eagerly coveted by tens of thousands of triathletes worldwide, who vie for them in a global series of qualifying triathlons and also in lotteries organised by the World Triathlon Corporation.

But if his recent form is any indication, Jaray stands a great chance of once again proving his triathlon mettle against the best in the world.

In 2010 he placed third in his age group in the Laguna Phuket International Marathon; was second placed Thai athlete in the Laguna Phuket Triathlon; and first Thai finisher in the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship at Laguna Phuket – his first Ironman 70.3 – in a time of 05:02:03.

In April this year he completed the Singapore Aviva Ironman 70.3 – his first overseas triathlon – in 4:49:22 to place 10th in his age group; in June he was the first half marathon runner home in the Laguna Phuket International Marathon; and in July he was the first Thai finisher and second overall in the Bangkok Triathlon with a time of 2: 28:59.

Jaray took up cycling and running just eight years ago and was inspired to add swimming to his athletic repertoire after watching competitors in the annual Laguna Phuket Triathlon.

His first triathlon was the 2007 Laguna Phuket Triathlon. Since then he’s taken part in the event every year, as well as other triathlons in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

Jaray’s race preparations have included training with triathlon legend Jürgen Zäck, the record-breaking eight-time Ironman winner, in his Triathlon Academy at Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club in Phuket. His current schedule sees him training for up to five hours each day.

Jaray rates Jürgen as a hard taskmaster: “It’s extremely hard and concentrated training,” he says.

He admits that swimming is the weakest of his three triathlon disciplines, but says he’s improved under Jürgen’s instruction: “I am getting better and faster.”

He’s pushing his 61kg body – “It used to be 64kg before I started with Jürgen” – to the limit with sprints and endurance training in each triathlon discipline.

In addition to sponsorship from Laguna Phuket, Jaray is supported by the Thai Ocean Venture seafood exporting company of Phuket and You Can bike shop in Bang Tao.

Jaray says: “It’s amazing to achieve this opportunity to take part in not one, but two World Championships and I’ll be giving all my best efforts.

“It also makes me very proud to represent my country at this level and I hope I can inspire more Thai athletes to get involved in the great sport of triathlon.”

Keen Global Interest in Laguna Phuket 2011 Double TriathlonFestival
Organisers of the 18th Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT) on 27 November and second
Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship a week later on 4 December, report
keen worldwide interest in the new triathlon double bill, with growing numbers of
triathletes opting to compete in both events.
This year’s LPT sold out all its 700 slots just 40 days after registrations opened in
March and a waiting list is now set up.
The 2011Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship, with more than 500 sign-ups, is
almost halfway towards its target of 1,100 entries, with more online registrations
received every day.
And with more than100 triathletes registered for both events – twice the number
at the same time last year – there are signs of growing worldwide enthusiasm for
the triathlon double bill.
The inaugural Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship joined the
long-established LPT last year to create the new week-long Tri-Fest at Laguna
Phuket.
More than 140 triathletes who competed in both 2010 events on consecutive
weekends soaked up the unique Tri-Fest ambience of training and social events
around the resort during the rest of the week.
“The debut of our double triathlon concept with a festival of associated activities
was a fantastic success and this is reflected in the enthusiasm for this year’s
events,” said Debbie Dionysius, Laguna Phuket’s assistant vice president of
Destination Marketing.
“We’ve set a new standard with this concept that gives triathletes worldwide the
opportunity to take on a unique challenge of two world-class triathlons on backto-
back weekends, while enjoying everything else on offer during the week.”

The 2011 Tri-Fest has activities that include a training camp focusing on recovery
and race preparation conducted by Ironguides; open water swim competition;
“Meet the Pros” cocktail party; speed golf tournament; Ironman Movie Night;
Ironkids event at Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club; and Tri Trade Show.
Winners of the 2010 LPT were Massimo Cigana of Italy and Australia’s Belinda
Granger. The inaugural Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship, with a 50-strong
professional field, was won by American Tim O’Donnell and Caroline Steffen of
Switzerland, both expected to return to Phuket in December to defend their titles.
Triathlon is rated as the world’s fastest-growing participation sport. The LPT is a
Destination Triathlon featuring a 1.8km swim; 55km bike ride and 12km run. The
Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship is the culmination of the World Triathlon
Corporation’s Asia-Pacific Ironman 70.3 Event Series, with a 1.9km swim; 90 .1km
bike ride and 21.1km run.
