The History of Thai Mask Dancing

The performance of Thai mask dancing (Khon in Thai) is a time-honoured performance which is both charming to watch and an important part of Thai society. In English it is known in many names, Khon Drama, Thai mask-dancing or more simply Khon. Previously, this kind of performance could only be seen at very special occasions, such as major national celebrations. The reason for this being, in times gone by Khon performances were only staged in front of the King whilst he was in his Palace of residence. However, Khon can now actually be performed in public places during special occasions. It is believed that Khon performances go back more than 700 years.

Khon player or performer
Being a Khon performer is not something anyone can do. To be able to be a Khon performer, one must have a high level of expertise with regards to traditional Thai dancing. Bear in mind that performances were previously staged before the king. Therefore, there was no margin for errors or mistakes on the performer’s part and each performance had to be absolutely perfect. In most cases, the performers of Khon would have been trained by the royal Thai dancing schools which were located within the palaces. This would happen so that the general public would have no knowledge of how and what the performers were being taught. Another interesting point it that the performers were all women due to the fact that in times gone by men were not allowed entrance to Royal Palace grounds.

The story of Khon
Almost all Khon performances feature episodes from the Ramakian. The Ramakian (Glory of Rama”, sometimes also spelled Ramakien) is Thailand’s national epic, derived from the Hindu epic Ramayana.
Most of the Khon performances use a version of the epic rewritten by Rama II. These were specifically rewritten to feature in Khon dramas.
While the main story is identical to that of the Hindu Ramayana, many other aspects were transposed into a Thai context, such as the clothes, weapons, topography, and elements of nature, which are described as being Thai in style. Although Thailand is considered a Theravada Buddhist society, the Hindu mythology latent in the Ramakian serves to provide Thai legends with a creation myth, as well as representations of various spirits which complement beliefs derived from Thai animism.

Introduction to Ramakian story
So what is The Ramakian (Glory of Rama”) story? Basically, this story is about a war between a god and a demon. The god is named Rama and the Demon Thossakan. They both have very powerful armies; especially Rama, who has a very powerful general, a magic monkey called Hanuman. Therefore, a Khon performance will be based on the fights of these two armies.

The present Khon performances
Nowadays, Khon has changed both in terms of its characteristics and the way it is performed. Khon dance is now taught in public art schools and anyone, who is trained properly, can perform Khon. Performances can be staged everywhere, including public halls or theatres. It is one of the most important Thai art performances. There are some aspects that remain the same as when Khon was introduced, which are the norms and tradition of the performance, the respect the performer shows towards their teachers and the story of Ramakian.

8 Must Things to do whilst in Phuket

Diving and Snorkeling

In Phuket snorkelling and diving have become synonymous with each other. The ocean surrounding Phuket with its warm waters, clear visibility, and untold varieties of marine life, all help explain why Phuket is one of the top diving destinations in the world.

Most beaches in Phuket are perfect for snorkelling. However, the months of October to April are best for visibility as the sea is at its calmest.

Diving is Phuket’s number one tourism-based industry, and the dive tour operators are literally situated around every corner.

Phuket Trekking

If you’re looking to try something different whilst you’re here in Phuket, try a trek through its tropical rain forest and beautiful countryside. If you travel to the North of Phuket you will find Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. The park covers an area of approximately 22 sq kms and is Phuket’s last area of virgin rainforest and is home to protected species of wild animals. The national park has several forest trails for hiking and guides can be hired from the reserve office.

Phuket Cable Ski

There is one water sport you can do away from the beaches here on Phuket. Phuket Cable Ski is the only Wake Park in Phuket and it is here that you can enjoy one of the most fun and challenging activities you’re likely to find on the island. At Phuket Cable Ski you can be towed around a 410 meters long, 110 meters wide course at a speed of 28 -58 kilometers per hour, depending on your experience. It’s ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Elephant Trekking Tour

One of the most enjoyable activities to do whilst visiting Phuket is an elephant trekking tour. It is probably the favourite activity among both foreign and Thai visitors. You will have an opportunity to ride a domesticated and gentle elephant through the untouched Phuket jungle. At the elephant camp, during the tour, you will have an opportunity to enjoy an elephant show which includes watching them play football, dancing and painting. You will also be able to take them to bath in a stream.

Kayaking

Kayaking in the areas surrounding Phuket is a once in a lifetime experience. Take the opportunity to explore either in a traditional kayak or a purpose-designed inflatable canoe and you will be captivated by a world you never knew existed. The canoes will take you through a mesmerizing maze of almost surreal crystalline limestone caves which are known in the local language as “hongs” – a myriad of caves, tunnels and interior lagoons.

Cooking Class

Learn to make some of that fabulous food Thailand is so famous for while you are on holiday in Phuket. If you love the flavour of Thai food, and want to be able to cook the same food, by spending a couple of hours at a Thai Cooking Classes in Phuket you will be able to cook up a delicious Thai meal for your family and friends. Many of the hotels and especially the large luxury resorts offer in-house classes but if the style or format does not suit there are plenty of private classes to choose from.

Helicopter Tour

See Phuket Island like you’ve never seen it before, take a ride 100 feet from the ground and experience the magnificent view of the Pearl of the Andaman. Nothing else comes close to touching the magic of vertical flight; from the moment you lift into the air to the second the helicopter settles gracefully back on the ground it is a truly exciting and unforgettable experience. Helicopter sightseeing is an experience out of the ordinary. This is an encounter never to be forgotten and an unusual gift idea that will suit anyone.

Sightseeing Tour

Through one of the many tour operators on the island you can book a tour which offers a cultural and scenic treat of Phuket Island. Visit Phuket’s many view points, located along the scenic coastline. Then tour Phuket Town where you can view centuries-old Sino-Portuguese buildings, a combination of modern Thai, Chinese and Portuguese style. If you want to explore your spiritual side or how others view their own spiritual side you will definitely want to add temples to your sightseeing in Phuket list.

This is only a small example of the many things you can do whilst staying on “The Pearl of the Andaman”. If you wish to try any of our suggestions or are interested in other tours or activities please visit the tour desk in your resort or one of the many tour operators who can be found all over the island.

Thai AirAsia is currently seeking and accepting donations of bottled drinking water, which has become a scarce resource in Bangkok during the ongoing flood crisis. We are determined to use our connectivity to other destinations in order to collect large supplies of drinking water, which will be distributed to residents in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. We welcome donations from everyone and would like to invite individual donors, and all sectors, including the private, government, and non-profit sectors to contribute to this good cause.

The donations of bottled water should be packed appropriately for shipping purposes. Donation drop-off points are located at all AirAsia counters in Thailand’s airports nationwide including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Krabi, Hat Yai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Narathiwat, and Phuket.
