8 Must Things to do whilst in Phuket

Diving and Snorkeling

In Phuket snorkelling and diving have become synonymous with each other. The ocean surrounding Phuket with its warm waters, clear visibility, and untold varieties of marine life, all help explain why Phuket is one of the top diving destinations in the world.

Most beaches in Phuket are perfect for snorkelling. However, the months of October to April are best for visibility as the sea is at its calmest.

Diving is Phuket’s number one tourism-based industry, and the dive tour operators are literally situated around every corner.

Phuket Trekking

If you’re looking to try something different whilst you’re here in Phuket, try a trek through its tropical rain forest and beautiful countryside. If you travel to the North of Phuket you will find Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. The park covers an area of approximately 22 sq kms and is Phuket’s last area of virgin rainforest and is home to protected species of wild animals. The national park has several forest trails for hiking and guides can be hired from the reserve office.

Phuket Cable Ski

There is one water sport you can do away from the beaches here on Phuket. Phuket Cable Ski is the only Wake Park in Phuket and it is here that you can enjoy one of the most fun and challenging activities you’re likely to find on the island. At Phuket Cable Ski you can be towed around a 410 meters long, 110 meters wide course at a speed of 28 -58 kilometers per hour, depending on your experience. It’s ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Elephant Trekking Tour

One of the most enjoyable activities to do whilst visiting Phuket is an elephant trekking tour. It is probably the favourite activity among both foreign and Thai visitors. You will have an opportunity to ride a domesticated and gentle elephant through the untouched Phuket jungle. At the elephant camp, during the tour, you will have an opportunity to enjoy an elephant show which includes watching them play football, dancing and painting. You will also be able to take them to bath in a stream.

Kayaking

Kayaking in the areas surrounding Phuket is a once in a lifetime experience. Take the opportunity to explore either in a traditional kayak or a purpose-designed inflatable canoe and you will be captivated by a world you never knew existed. The canoes will take you through a mesmerizing maze of almost surreal crystalline limestone caves which are known in the local language as “hongs” – a myriad of caves, tunnels and interior lagoons.

Cooking Class

Learn to make some of that fabulous food Thailand is so famous for while you are on holiday in Phuket. If you love the flavour of Thai food, and want to be able to cook the same food, by spending a couple of hours at a Thai Cooking Classes in Phuket you will be able to cook up a delicious Thai meal for your family and friends. Many of the hotels and especially the large luxury resorts offer in-house classes but if the style or format does not suit there are plenty of private classes to choose from.

Helicopter Tour

See Phuket Island like you’ve never seen it before, take a ride 100 feet from the ground and experience the magnificent view of the Pearl of the Andaman. Nothing else comes close to touching the magic of vertical flight; from the moment you lift into the air to the second the helicopter settles gracefully back on the ground it is a truly exciting and unforgettable experience. Helicopter sightseeing is an experience out of the ordinary. This is an encounter never to be forgotten and an unusual gift idea that will suit anyone.

Sightseeing Tour

Through one of the many tour operators on the island you can book a tour which offers a cultural and scenic treat of Phuket Island. Visit Phuket’s many view points, located along the scenic coastline. Then tour Phuket Town where you can view centuries-old Sino-Portuguese buildings, a combination of modern Thai, Chinese and Portuguese style. If you want to explore your spiritual side or how others view their own spiritual side you will definitely want to add temples to your sightseeing in Phuket list.

This is only a small example of the many things you can do whilst staying on “The Pearl of the Andaman”. If you wish to try any of our suggestions or are interested in other tours or activities please visit the tour desk in your resort or one of the many tour operators who can be found all over the island.

Phuket King’s Cup Regatta: Celebrating a history of the biggest and most successful regatta in Asia

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is now in its Quarter Centenary year, after first sailing in 1987 to celebrate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 60th birthday. Under Royal Patronage, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club.

Recognised throughout the eastern hemisphere as the premier sailing event of its kind, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta will again present a spectacular display of Asia’s finest sailing talent who will compete on this most coveted international stage. 2011’s event will run from December 3 to December 10, beginning with two days of registration, briefing and practice, before five days of exceptional racing concluding in the Royal Awards Ceremony on the final Saturday.

The Phuket King’s Cup is a competition steeped in history and magic. The Regatta was established to celebrate a most auspicious occasion; in 1986, a number of Thailand’s yachting fraternity met to discuss what they could do as a special tribute to His Majesty the King’s forthcoming Fifth Cycle, or 60th birthday, for the following year on December 5, 1987.
After careful discussion, it was decided to hold a Royal Regatta. Phuket was to become the glittering location for this sailing spectacle; the first such event held in the beautiful waters of the Andaman Sea.

The inaugural Phuket King’s Cup Regatta was realised in 1987 by Royal Varuna sailors, including Commodore Chris King, Dr. Rachot Kanjanavanit, Al Chandler and Adolph Knees. It was yachting and Phuket aficionado M.L. Tridosyuth Devakul, better known as renowned architect and developer Mom Tri, who placed the resources of his recently opened Phuket Yacht Club Hotel at Nai Harn Bay in Phuket, at the Regatta organiser’s disposal.

The first Regatta began with a mixture of keelboats, catamarans, Lasers and even windsurfers. Few who were there at the time will ever forget Varuna member Reg Chambers, who sailed a Laser, calling “starboard” on a 45-ft keelboat, which had to give way.

Like any prominent yacht racing event, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has developed its own folk-lore. Scott McCook, for example, sailed his beach-launched catamaran up from Singapore, won all five races in one year, then sailed the small cat back to Singapore Harbour.

More recently the Regatta has become a big boat event, attracting keelboats and ocean-going catamaran teams from around the world. As a principal fixture on the Asian Yachting Circuit, the Regatta annually features upwards of 100 boats and 2,000 participants, ranging from the high tech yachts in Racing Class, to live-aboard ocean cruisers, multihulls and classics.

International-standard race management has been combined with lively beach parties during regatta week to create this world-renowned yacht racing exhibition.

Kevin Whitcraft, President of the King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee explained the reasons behind why there are so many keen competitors each year; “If you were to ask any of the competitors that take part each year why they compete in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, you will get as many answers as there are competitors. For some it is the ideal of taking part; for others, it is the besting of their friends and colleagues. A handful are in it for the glory and it is always nice to take a trophy home.”

There are prizes up for grabs each night with trophies for first, second and third places in each class. Overall class trophies (first, second and third) are awarded at the end of the week for series winners. After a successful week of racing, a boat’s haul of trophies can easily fill a shelf or a suitcase.

The King’s Cup Trophy, the Royal Trophy, is very special. The original trophy is made from silver seated on a column of Ash wood and was deigned by ML Tridhosyuth Devakul, the original owner of Mom Tri’s Boathouse and one of the founders of the Phuket King’s Cup regatta back in 1987. The trophy features 9 sails rising up from a silver bed that represents the sea. On top of the sails is the symbol of His Majesty the King of Thailand, which is known as the Tra Sanyalak, along with his initials and the Thai symbol for 9 as the King is the ninth of this Dynasty. Surmounting all of this is the King’s crown, symbolising his patronage of the event. Winners of each class received a quarter size replica of the Royal Trophy.

Celebrate the King’s 84th Birthday with Anantara and Brighten the Future of Thailand’s Children

T0 celebrate the 84th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, all 10 Anantara hotels in Thailand will be donating 99 baht for every guest staying at all resorts from now until December 5th

to the Raks Thai Foundation’s 84 Schools Project.

The Raks Thai Foundation’s 84 Schools Project has been designed in response to the awareness that many Thai children are not reaching their educational potential. Each year nearly 600 schools do not pass Thailand’s quality assessment, and more than 100,000 students drop out of school due to poverty; mostly in poor communities in remote rural districts.
The foundation believes that encouraging students to remain in school is not enough to make a real change. Instead, a brand new learning process based on the practical principles of education, livelihood and sustainability is being implemented, alongside school improvements such as clean water, sports equipment, education materials, computers, libraries and even agricultural equipment.

The project is designed to facilitate 6,720 disadvantaged children aged 7 – 14 in 84 poor rural schools to become independent lifelong learners who possess important life and occupational skills, supported by 168 teachers trained in the new learning concept.

Children will have the chance to study their community environment, and in small teams of 5 – 10 students will propose and implement small projects on lifestyle topics including leadership, alternative occupations, culture and environmental conservation. These important life lessons also raise self esteem and build confidence to help each child’s development.

“We are thrilled to be supporting this charitable schooling project in honor of HM the King’s 84th birthday,” Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Group including Anantara said. “Anantara is proud to be playing a role to enhance the future of Thailand’s underprivileged children. By empowering the country’s youth through education and life skills, as well as teaching them how to preserve nature and culture, the long term benefits will be felt by each student and their community.”
