Fresenius Kabi Asia-Pacific hosted Asia’s Premier Symposium for Clinical Nutrition in Thailand

The Fresenius Kabi Advanced Nutrition Course (FRANC) Asia 2012 brings global experts to Asia Pacific to discuss the development of Clinical Nutrition in the region. FRANC Asia held in Phuket for the first time.

The Fresenius Kabi Advanced Nutrition Course (FRANC) Asia 2012 was held in Thailand at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa from 27 to 28 April 2012. FRANC Asia brings medical experts in their field from Asia, Europe and South America for scientific discussions on current concepts and developments within Clinical Nutrition therapy, providing a unique forum for experience sharing and discussions within the field.

Professor Jonathan Asprer, chairman of FRANC Asia 2012 revealed that “FRANC Asia has been well received each year with high attendance and active participation from top experts in Clinical Nutrition from Asia Pacific and Europe. Our aim is to generate discussion and advancement in Clinical Nutrition and to raise awareness of malnutrition in the region. FRANC Asia offers an exceptional opportunity for practitioners of Clinical Nutrition to learn of the most recent updates and cutting-edge developments, and practice excellence in Clinical Nutrition.”

Fresenius Kabi Asia Pacific hosted the 12th FRANC Asia in Thailand. FRANC is a symposium for medical professionals to share their knowledge and experiences in clinical nutrition therapy. Insufficient food and nutrient intake due to disability and disease are at the heart of the cause of malnutrition, a major public health problem that frequently goes unrecognized and untreated.

It has been found that malnutrition is costly to the individual, to society and to the economy – the estimated cost of disease-related malnutrition in Europe is Euro171 billion.

Approximately 30% of patients are malnourished upon arrival at hospital or during their hospital stay. Malnutrition negatively affects the general well-being of hospital patients as well as their response to treatment, which can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. This results in increased healthcare costs, such as an increase in a patient’s length of hospital stay. Prof Chulaporn Roongpisuthipong from the Department of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital points out even in Thailand for hospitalized patients, the prevalence of malnutrition is still high and associated with increased costs and increased length of hospital stay. It is shown from Prof Chulaporns’ presentation that nearly 70% of patients in internal medicine wards and nearly 50% of patients in surgical wards are classified as malnourished.

FRANC Asia, organized by Fresenius Kabi Asia Pacific since 2001, brings together medical professionals in Clinical Nutrition from Asia Pacific and beyond. Presentations by international experts on current topics within the field of Clinical Nutrition are complemented by interactive sessions and working groups to facilitate a sharing of knowledge and experiences, and to promote networking.

Fresenius Kabi’s objective in organizing FRANC Asia is to focus on advanced topics within the field of clinical nutrition therapy and implementation in daily practice.

FRANC Asia 2012 welcomed over 220 delegates from Europe and 11 Asia Pacific countries including Thailand, Vietnam, China, India, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong.
