4th Mai Khao Turtle Release To Take Place On Phuket’s Beautiful Mai Khao Beach On March 29, 2013

Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa will stage the 4th Mai Khao Turtle Release on March 29, 2013. This important annual event is organized to raise funds and awareness for the plight of Phuket’s critically endangered sea turtles.

Supported by the Phuket Marine Biological Center and the Royal Thai Navy, the event sees the release of rehabilitated green turtles back into the Andaman Sea. It takes place on beautiful Mai Khao Beach in front of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa’s Main Pool. Local officials, Phuket residents and resort staff enjoy an afternoon of fun activities and light refreshments and get to witness the rewarding sight of the turtles entering their natural habitat.

The wonderful work done by the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation (founded by JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa), the Injured Turtle Rehabilitation Program (under the Phuket Marine Biological Center) and the Turtle Hatchery Program (under the Royal Thai Navy) is possible thanks to ongoing financial support from the Phuket community, as well as donations by guests at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club, Marriott’s Mai Khao Beach, Anantara Phuket Villas and Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa.

Everybody is invited to help with the protection of the area’s endangered turtle population. Financial donations are much appreciated, as are people’s attendance at the 4th Mai Khao Turtle Release on March 29, 2013. Every THB2,500 raised pays for the rehabilitation of one turtle and its release back into the Andaman Sea.

This year the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation is marking its 11th anniversary with the construction of an exciting new turtle educational centre onsite at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. In cooperation with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Phuket Marine Biology Center (PMBC), Department of Fisheries and SEEK Phuket, this project includes a turtle rehabilitation pool to help Phuket’s injured turtles. Initially it will be home to four injured adult turtles. The facility will also encourage environmental and marine stewardship education through its design and programs, including a nursery area for baby turtles.

JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa’s General Manager Tony Pedroni – who is chairman of the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation – welcomed the staging of the 4th Mai Khao Turtle Release as a sign of the ongoing efforts to preserve Mai Khao’s environment.

Phuket’s sea turtles face multiple threats and their numbers have severely depleted in recent years. Commercial fishing kills thousands of them every year. Many more die from eating or becoming trapped in plastic debris littering the ocean, not to mention entanglement in fishing nets and being hit by speedboats.

มูลนิธิเพื่อการอนุรักษ์เต่าทะเลหาดไม้ขาว จัดงาน “ปล่อยเต่าทะเลคืนสู่ธรรมชาติ ณ หาดไม้ขาว ครั้งที่ 4”

มูลนิธิเพื่อการอนุรักษ์เต่าทะเลหาดไม้ขาว และโรงแรม เจดับบลิว แมริออท ภูเก็ต รีสอร์ท แอนด์ สปา ร่วมกันจัดงาน “ปล่อยเต่าทะเลคืนสู่ธรรมชาติ ณ หาดไม้ขาว ครั้งที่ 4” ในวันที่ 29 มีนาคม 2556 เพื่อสร้างจิตสำนึกในการร่วมอนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเล ซึ่งเป็นสัตว์ทะเลที่อยู่ในภาวะเสี่ยงต่อการสูญพันธุ์ รวมทั้งเป็นการระดมทุนจากผู้สนใจบริจาค เพื่อนำเงินไปสนับสนุนโครงการช่วยเหลือ และอนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเลต่อไป โดยนายไมตรี   อินทุสุต ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดภูเก็ตเป็นประธานในพิธีเปิด  และนายชาญชัย   ดวงจิตต์ ผู้อำนวยการการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย ร่วมงานในครั้งนี้ด้วย

กิจกรรมจัดขึ้นในเวลา 15.00 -1730 น. ณ บริเวณหาดไม้ขาว ด้านหน้าสระว่ายน้ำ Main Pool ภายในพื้นที่โรงแรม เจดับบลิว แมริออท ภูเก็ต รีสอร์ท แอนด์ สปา โดยผู้เข้าร่วมบริจาคจะได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรม และได้เพลิดเพลินกับบรรยากาศที่งดงามของทะเล และชายหาดไม้ขาว โดยมีกิจกรรมมากมายจากทีมสันทนาการมืออาชีพจากโรงแรมฯ และจากมูลนิธิฯ รวมทั้งยังมีของว่าง และเครื่องดื่มให้บริการภายในงาน และปิดท้ายด้วยการปล่อยเต่าทะเลกลับสู่ธรรมชาติซึ่งเป็นกิจกรรมสำคัญที่สุดของงาน โดยพันธุ์เต่าทะเลที่นำมาปล่อยในครั้งนี้ เป็นเต่าตนุ จำนวน 85 ตัว ซึ่งได้รับความอนุเคราะห์จากทางทัพเรือภาคที่ 3 และศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาทรัพยากรทางทะเลและชายฝั่งทะเลอันดามัน

ผู้เข้าร่วมบริจาคจะได้รับเต่าเพื่อร่วมกิจกรรมฯ 1 ตัว จากมูลนิธิฯ เมื่อบริจาคเงินจำนวน 2,500 บาท ทั้งนี้ รายได้จากการจัดกิจกรรมในครั้งนี้ ทางมูลนิธิฯ จะนำไปสนับสนุนโครงการช่วยเหลือเต่าทะเลบาดเจ็บ ภายใต้การดำเนินการของศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาทรัพยากรทางทะเล และชายฝั่งทะเลอันดามัน และโครงการอนุรักษ์พันธุ์เต่าทะเล โดยกองทัพเรือภาคที่ 3 รวมทั้งเพื่อสนับสนุนโครงการก่อสร้างศูนย์การเรียนรู้การอนุรักษ์และช่วยเหลือเต่าทะเล ภายในพื้นทีโรงแรมเจดับบลิว แมริออท ภูเก็ต รีสอร์ท แอนด์ สปา เนื่องในโอกาสครบรอบปีที่ 11 ของการก่อตั้งมูลนิธิฯ ภายใต้ความร่วมมือจากทั้งหน่วยงานของรัฐ และเอกชน เช่น ศวพ.ภูเก็ต (PMBC), ศูนย์วิจัยฯ ประมงชายฝั่ง พังงา, IUCN และ SEEK ภูเก็ต
