Acclaimed Aussie Artist Christopher Hogan at Laguna Phuket Summer Family Festival Internationally renowned Australian artist Christopher Hogan will again be Artist-in-Residence at this year’s Laguna Phuket Summer Family Festival with a programme of daily art classes and tutorials. Christopher, a specialist in marine-themed abstract paintings, will hold morning and afternoon art classes for children and adults from 18 July until 27 August at the Festival site in Canal Village Shopping Centre, and is scheduled to hold tutorials around the resort’s luxury hotel properties. He’ll also exhibit his acclaimed abstract paintings, inspired by fish skin patterns and underwater scenes gleaned from scuba diving experiences on the Great Barrier Reef near his home on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Christopher’s appearance at this year’s Laguna Phuket Summer Family Festival follows the success of his 2010 debut as Festival Artist-in-Residence. The Howland family, who took one of his Festival classes, wrote of their experience: “The couple of hours we spent painting with you were a genuine highlight of our holiday. We were all really pleased with how well our pictures turned out under your expert tuition. “More importantly, it was wonderful to do something calm, reflective and creative together as a family – we will treasure our novice art works as a unique reminder of our fabulous holiday.”
As well as holding his popular classes for hotel guests and local residents last year, Christopher also launched a creative art course for teachers and pupils of a Phang Nga provincial school supported by Laguna Phuket’s Developing Sustainable Schools programme - and helped raise THB100, 000 (US$3,300) for the school with a charity “Art Party” and raffle of paintings. “Last year at Laguna Phuket was an amazing experience and I’m really excited about being there again for another Summer Family Festival to add to the appeal of the overall event,” said Christopher. I hope to repeat the success of my classes and develop my relationship with hotel guests and the local community.” Christopher’s Summer Family Festival art classes, held Monday-Saturday 10.00-12.00pm and 2.30-4.30pm, cost THB 2,000 nett for adults and THB 1,000 nett for children (4-14 years). Private lessons are available by appointment. The Laguna Phuket Summer Family Festival runs from 25 June until 31October with benefits that include free dining for kids aged 12 and under at all seven Laguna Phuket hotels; free kids golf when playing with a full-paying adult; free speedboat tours for kids to Naka and Khai islands; daily Kidz Fun Zone activities (until 22 August) with the first session free; free evening Kidz Lounges at all hotels, open 6-10pm; free tennis for in-house guests; and free extra bed for kids aged 12 and under. |

Songkran Festival Fun under the Sun Songkran or Traditional Thai New Year Festival on 13 April every year is the celebrated time that combines religious merit making, unity and fun harmoniously. Morning activities at the temples or the other assigned venues are offering food to the monks followed by sprinkling scented water from silver bowls on a Buddha image. The reunion today brings the pleasant smiles and delights to all members of family, especially the elders who dressed in Yaya, the unique styled attire of Phuketian.
Not only the day of fun but also the gathering of families can be done in order to involve the sprinkle of water by the younger on the elder as a tribute of respect and for blessing. Many stories in the old days are happily relayed to the younger around. Delicious local food and snack that well cooked by the cousin wait to be tasted. Late in the morning, with bright color dresses and full equipments in hands, we are prompt for splashing at front of the house.
Happy time with smile, laugh and liveliness can be easily found on everyone’s face while the splash is going on. In the afternoon, many of accessories are moved to a pick-up car for us to splash water around the town. Some may ride the motor-bike if they’d like to. The difference of Phuket from the other places is not only splashing along the road but on the beach and in the sea also. Most wear the same style of soak dress and hair while dancing mingle with laughing. It symbolizes the good time of the new year day.
That’s not enough. Early night time, the continuation of fun is at Phuket Tourist office and Chalerm Phrakiat Park. For this year, Tourism Authority of Thailand proudly presents the great event as ever. Many kinds of entertainments and performances including the carving huge ice to Chino Portugese building, the symbol of Phuket’s old town are waiting for your visit. Songkran Day or so called by the foreigners as Splash Day is full of fun. Many friends from overseas prefer to be in Thailand during this happy time. A Moveable Feast: An Artist’s Journey Through the World (Part One) Moussou has traveled and painted around the world. From huge public murals in southern Taiwan to intricate traditional Indian miniatures in Rajasthan. She’s drawn portraits of friends in Senegal, been inspired by street performers in Holland and painted desert landscapes in Timbuktu. Here in Thailand she’s been most impressed with ancient temple murals and the explosions of color from all the flowers and plants to be found everywhere.
Her artwork has become a personal journal of all her travels. Each piece tells a story in some form or another – whether the story of a particular moment caught in time or an ongoing drama spanning many generations.
For this exhibit Moussou has chosen to showcase the wide variety of techniques she has utilized over the past few years. In these paintings the materials and styles she has used include oils, acrylics, water colors, crayon, encaustic, aluminum foil, cyanotype, monotype prints, plexi-glass, collage, eggshell, spray paint and miniatures. |
