Phuket E Magazine update news in Phuket

Laguna Beach Resort, a cornerstone hotel property of the deluxe Laguna Phuket destination resort, will soon undergo a change of ownership.

Laguna Hotels & Resorts Plc., the joint owning company of Laguna Beach Resort, has agreed to sell its shareholding in the hotel for THB 723, 565, 000 to Laguna Phuket Club Co. Ltd., a Thai company controlled by Real Estate Equity Partners (RECAP), an Asian-focused real estate private equity fund.

Laguna’s joint venture partner in the hotel has also agreed to sell the remaining shares to Laguna Phuket Club Co. Ltd., to give Recap full ownership of the

252-room deluxe beachfront property.  Completion of the deal is expected in May, 2011.

Laguna Beach Resort was the second hotel to be built in Laguna Phuket when it opened in 1992 and is now one of seven deluxe hotel and villa properties in the resort complex.

The operations of Laguna Beach Resort and the Laguna Phuket integrated resort complex will be unaffected by the change of ownership.

RECAP, headed by chairman Suchad Chiaranussati, has a high-profile presence in Thailand’s real estate market. It acquired Jungceylon shopping complex and hotel in Phuket in 2006 and has also invested in Bangkok’s prestigious four-tower Millennium Residence development.

The change in Laguna Beach Resort’s ownership comes six months after Laguna sold another hotel, the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, to Dusit Thani Plc. for THB 2.62 billion.

Both transactions are in line with Laguna’s publicly disclosed strategy of divesting part of its interests in Thailand, enabling focus on emerging opportunities elsewhere in Asia.

Laguna also recently announced that Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts will take over operations of the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket when the current management contract with Starwood Hotels & Resorts expires on 30 June 2011. The property will undergo a five-month THB 500 million refurbishment and re-open in December as the Angsana Laguna Phuket.

Michael Ayling, managing director of Laguna Resorts & Hotels, said: “These recent developments all reflect our commitment to developing our business in Phuket and elsewhere in the region, without compromising our renowned levels of customer service.”

Phuket E-Magazine travel to Six Senses Sanctuary Naka Yai Island and read letter from Lionel Valla.

We would like to share good experience and great thing of resort make for environment and community to all friends.

February 19th 2011

Dear Khun Chanyapatr and Phuket E Magazine editorial team,

Sawasdee Krab!  On behalf of the entire team I would like to extend you a warm welcome to our Six Senses Sanctuary. We are delighted that you have chosen to stay with us and it is our aim to ensure your stay with us is a memorable and enriching experience.

Six Senses Sanctuary is located on Naka Island which is about 3 km long and 1.5 km wide.  Aside from a local fishing village as our neighbors and a few bungalows, the island remains very untouched.

To ensure you have everything which you require, you will find easy reference speed dial buttons on your phone; these include your Butler and my self.

From wellbeing programs, healthy cuisine, fitness activities along with spa services to lifestyle education and an array of practitioners we have created the most enriching relaxing and rejuvenating environment possible for you to achieve your goals.

Six Senses Sanctuary is greatly concerned about climate change. Whilst the resort’s carbon footprint is improved through energy efficiency, sourcing local products etc. the biggest impacts of a typical stay are caused by flying. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done with this other than mitigate it. For this reason, a Six Senses Carbon Sense Fund has been established. 2.5% of the total bill will go to mitigate your carbon footprint. A large reforestation project linked to existing forest areas has been created together with other Six Senses Thai properties. 220,000 trees covering 180 acres in Northern Thailand will be planted annually.

Thank you for supporting us and our environment. To find out more about our Social and Environmental philosophies, please refer to our “The Little Green Book” in your villa.

For the comfort of our guests we discourage the use of mobile phones in public areas.  Please help to keep a feeling of peace and tranquility by not using mobile phones in the resort, with the exception of your villa.

I wish you a warm welcome and a delightful and rejuvenating stay. We all look forward to creating some wonderful memories in our Resort.

Sincerely,

Lionel Valla

General Manager of Six Senses Sanctuary Phuket
